Writers have likened the Moroccan city of Fez to a geode, filled with crystals of art and architecture. Among its brightest refractions are the geometric tile works known as zillij, which grace homes, shops, schools, mosques, streets and public fountains. This shows a decorated wall, including a taqshir calligraphic border, at the Attarine madrasah (Islamic school), built in 1325. In some designs, a single square meter of zillij may contain 5000 tiny polygonal pieces of tile. Zillij is assembled upside-down on a floor; only after a concrete backing has been poured upon it and allowed to set can the design be turned over, viewed and mounted.
